The football world is rallying around former NFL running back Christopher Duan “Chris” Johnson, who has publicly revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Johnson shared his diagnosis in an emotional interview, expressing his desire to bring awareness to the disease and encourage others facing similar battles.
Johnson, 40, said he was diagnosed in 2025 after first noticing weakness inhis right hand. Despite the disease’s progression affecting his mobility and speech, he remains determined to fight while using his platform to raise awareness for ALS research.
Widely regarded as one of the most explosive running backs in NFL history, Johnson built a remarkable career defined by speed, resilience, and record-breaking performances. After starring at East Carolina University, where he emerged as one of college football’s most dynamic playmakers, Johnson was selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the TennesseeTitans.
His historic 2009 season cemented his legacy. Johnson rushed for more than2,000 yards and set the NFL single-season record with 2,509 yards from scrimmage, a mark that still stands today. That unforgettable campaign earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors and established him as one of the league’s premier offensive stars.
Throughout his decade-long NFL career, Johnson suited up for the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl selections while finishing with more than 9,600 rushing yards and 64 total touchdowns. His elite speed earned him the nickname “CJ2K,” making him one of the most electrifying players of his era.
Johnson’s accomplishments extend beyond the professional level. A graduate of East Carolina University, he enjoyed a standout collegiate career highlighted by a breakout senior season that produced 2,960 all-purpose yards and 24 touchdowns. His impact on the game was later recognized with his induction into the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame, honoring his outstanding contributions to football.
Now facing perhaps the toughest challenge of his life, Johnson hopes his story will inspire others and shine a brighter light on ALS, a progressive neurological disease that currently has no cure.
